Jannah Burj Al Sarab - 5 Star Abu Dhabi Luxury

As much as we love travelling, many of us feel a longing for familiarity during our travels, to feel at home while you are far from the comfort of your own home. Well Jannah Burj Al Sarab is one of the very few hotels that have figured out how to execute this desire and deliver it throughout your stay.

During our visit to Abu Dhabi, we were lucky enough to be invited to indulge in the Jannah experience where immediately we found ourselves feeling right at home. From the moment we stepped foot onto the property we were greeted by a charming sign which proclaimed “Welcome home” and that feeling of “home” was the strong recurring theme we felt during our entire stay.

One example is how warmly we were welcomed by the staff and how we instantaneously felt a connection with each member of the team. It felt fantastically familiar as though we had been there many times before, perhaps in a different life. Upon entry a very lovely Karim welcomed us and immediately accompanied us to our suite, which we would shortly find out to be the glorious penthouse suite.

When the mahogany coloured doors were opened for us we were taken into an incredibly pleasant and open space. Our attention was immediately drawn to a modern while luxurious design scheme. The room had beautiful Arabic accents running through the rooms of the penthouse like a finely sewn luxurious thread which tied the design scheme together seamlessly. We especially loved the details of gold found around us which just exuded exquisite Arabic luxury.

The extravagance of the gold details were perfectly neutralised and complimented by the taupe coloured furniture and carpeting which had just the right amount of colour splashing through by the clever use of throw pillows. We thoroughly enjoyed the modern décor and the playful accents of traditional Arabic luxury. The views of the Gulf gleaming from our many windows was also the perfect view to introduce us to Abu Dhabi.

The penthouse was more than accommodating to our needs as the humongous space housed two large bedrooms, three large bathrooms, a very open and spacious living room with an equally large dining room. There was a large sized kitchen along with a work space for those travelling on business.

Our penthouse along with all other suites at Jannah Burj Al Sarab offer an array of facilities to guests such as 24 hour room service, extremely comfortable bedding, housekeeping with a nightly turn down service, free Wi-Fi and a 24 hour front desk service (very helpful when needing to leave the hotel at 3am to catch our flight). The hotel also has a fitness center and a cosy outdoor pool.

Jannah Burj Al Sarab is located on one of the busiest roads in Abu Dhabi so you will never have a dull moment while staying there or worry about how to find the place. We loved the fact that the hotel was opportunely close to Abu Dhabi’s city centre and we definitely took full advantage of this convenience.

Jannah Burj Al Sarab is also quite close to Abu Dhabi airport and it only took us a short drive (approximately 20 minutes) to get from the airport to the hotel. We were more than happy with this distance as taxis in Abu Dhabi are the true personification of what good value for money means. The convenient location does not end there, staying at Jannah Burj Al Sarab offered us easy access to all of Abu Dhabi’s iconic attractions such as the Grand Mosque, the Corniche boardwalk, Abu Dhabi Mall and Saadiyat Beach (to name just a few).

We also had a wonderful breakfast experience at Jannah eating our new favourite Lebanse snack - Saj. There were also all of breakfast usuals on offer such as an omelette station, baked beans, cereal, fresh fruits and chicken sausages. The breakfast space had lots of natural light with modern and tidy tables accompanied by friendly staff. It is easy to say that we enjoyed our entire experience at Jannah Burj Al Sarab from its warm hospitality to the incredibly spacious rooms. We look forward to returning to Abu Dhabi and revisiting Jannah Burj Al Sarab soon.

Camp Jabulani - Luxury Safari Lodge in South Africa

Article by Kristof Eyckmans visiting in May 2017 | Official Website: campjabulani.com

South Africa knows how to offer luxury, not only in the cities, but also in the bush.

Camp Jabulani is a very private luxury safari lodge, located within the private Kapama Game Reserve near Kruger National Park, and it’s the perfect example of what a luxury safari lodge should be like. Exclusive, private, luxurious and with attention to every detail, this place just has it all. Not to mention the game reserve holds a massive amount of animals, including the big 5.

It’s location is so secluded and private, that even some local guides don’t know exactly where it is situated. Lucky enough you don’t have to worry about that. Upon arrival at the gates of the Kapama Game Reserve, your ranger will be waiting for you to drive you to the lodge. Once arrived at the lodge you’ll feel straight away that this is another level of safari. All the staff knows your name, and check-in doesn’t even exist. One just knows who you are, what you like and which suite you are sleeping in.

Talking about the accommodation, there are only 6 suites (rather call them 1 bedroom villas) and the Zindoga villa, with the latter being ideal for a group or family as it comprises 3 bedrooms, all with their own private bathroom of course.

Camp Jabulani works together with the very famous brand Relais & Chateaux, which guarantees you to have a gastronomic experience several times a day, and also with Virtuoso to make sure the level of luxury will always be of the highest standards.

The lodge came to live when the owners started to rescue the orphaned elephant Jabulani (hence the name of the lodge), afterwards followed by rescuing many more vulnerable or injured animals. Due to the fact that these elephants are being raised by humans, the Camp uses them to educate people about these wonderful creatures and to interact with them. Did you ever feel how soft an elephants tongue is? Or touched the sole of an elephants foot? You’ll get to experience all of this over here.

But that is just part of the experience. As a guest at Camp Jabulani you also get a private tour in the nearby HESC (Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre) where they try to rescue as many animals as possible, and if they can, release them afterwards back into the wild. But this is where the true value of staying at Camp Jabulani once again shows, as only guest staying at Camp Jabulani are invited on a VIP one on one meeting with a cheetah. It is truly amazing.

Besides the interactions with the animals and the visit to the HESC, the lodge offers many other options to enjoy yourself, even though you are in the middle of a vast game reserve. There’s the obvious game drives with your designated ranger, but also an outdoor spa, a fitness, a wine cellar to do some wine degustation’s, …

Thanks to the massive amount of animals living in the reserve (including the Big Five), the game drives surely are one of the highlights of your stay. Not only are the vehicles amazingly comfortable, but your field guide will organize your game drives according to your individual preferences, unlike other game lodges where you just need to go with the itinerary they provide you. Another highlight is the famous sundowner (the South-African word for sunset cocktails), which Camp Jabulani elevated to another level, making it into a 5 star culinary indulgence in the middle of nowhere. This is quintessential Africa.

Once you’re back at the lodge the main fireplace is lit and soon enough several gastronomic delights will be served for you. The wonderful South African wines that are paired with the food just enhance the feeling of true luxury.

Once the day has come to a close and you are enjoying your villa, make sure to ask the staff to light your fireplace and to heat your private outside plunge pool. The massive freestanding bath is also hard to resist.

As said, Camp Jabulani gives you a true African experience and it will be hard to find something equally inspiring and luxurious.

Pitalpa Views - Hunter Valley Luxury Home

Pitalpa Views - is a stunning rural retreat in the heart of the Hunter Valley's wine region, a 2 hour drive north of Sydney. The picturesque Hunter region encompasses charming towns and villages, rolling vineyards and olive groves, and splendid national parks of the Hunter Valley, the Upper Hunter and Barrington Tops. The traditionally activities are wine tasting at many of the iconic cellar doors, dining at a range of incredible establishments and, if time permits, playing a round of golf.

Piltapa itself is a newly constructed modern and luxurious 4 bedroom home set on 4.5 picturesque acres in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine region only 2 minutes from the heritage town of Branxton. The house sleeps up to 8 adults but is also well equipped to handle the rigours of a family vacation home.

On arrival, we were greeted by a large outdoor deck with uninhibited rural north facing views of the Royal Ranges and Barrington Tops. The deck quickly became the epicentre of our 5 party retreat. There we enjoyed a relaxing sunset with our favourite glass of locally produced wine; and enjoyed our mornings while the mist lifted exposing an array of local wildlife.

As the temperature dropped we moved in to the living room, featuring a relaxing log fire place. Firewood is kept on the western side of the yard and kindling is also kindly provided. Later, we moved to the fully equipped cinema room which featured comfortable leather reclining chairs, a large flatscreen tv and an endless library of DVDS.

The house is meticulously appointed with a beautiful gourmet gas kitchen, Nespresso machine, log fireplace, huge covered entertaining deck, gas Beefeater BBQ, media room with Foxtel and best of all 180 degree north facing view of the sweeping rural acres, the Royal Ranges and Barrington Tops National Park. The sunrises and sunsets are divine. For the gourmet enthusiast, the kitchen has every appliance you could ever need, including a gas cooktop, oven, dishwasher, microwave, slow cooker/crock pot, food processor, rice cooker, mix master, cake tins, pizza trays and more.

For the gold enthusiast, there is a local challenging and cheerful course at Branxton. For something more refined, we recommend the Crowne Plaza and Cypress Lakes which are less than 15 minutes' drive away.

3 Hong Kong Must See Hot Spots in Hong Kong

By Irma | Visiting June 2017

Causeway Bay - Times Square

When we decided to visit Hong Kong we couldn’t hear enough about Causeway Bay and its Time Square. This shopping centre is located at the top of the Causeway Bay train Station exit and is the area’s largest shopping centre comprising of over 200 stores. The stores offer a variety of items including a vast selection of luxury fashion. If you aren’t too excited about fashion you can also find electronics, toys, department stores and many restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat after you have been run off your feet from shopping.

Times Square has a very distinctive look and the whole Causeway Bay area has a quirky and kitschy charm which will be sure to challenge your abilities to be able to take it all in at once. Time Square incorporates extravagant displays and interesting installations upon entrance. Many people have been known to countdown the New Year around Times Square and it is somewhat indicative, although a much smaller scale of Times Square in New York (they do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery).

One of our favourite shops to explore was the Marks & Spencer store which offered us a look into Britain’s fashion classics. The makeup variety here is also flawless offering unique and exciting products from MAC, Urban Decay and Too Faced to name a few.

The Peak

What can we say besides the Victoria Peak Tram was quite a unique experience where you step into a wooden crafted trolley which makes you wonder how it will ever carry its passengers all the way up the steep hill lurking in front! Don’t kid yourself these are some steep tracks, in fact, Hong Kong is pleased to present the world's steepest Tram to tourists. However, once you learn to relax as you realise that the tram is perfectly capable of making it up the peak you will slowly begin to absorb the incredible greenery present all around you.

The beauty of the nature around us was further heightened as we began to view the city below from a different perspective, leaving it behind in the near distance. We soon felt as though we had delved further and further into some sort of rainforest as the height of the tram increased. As a result of this, we were stunned to find ourselves standing outside two shopping centres once we stepped out onto the top of the peak. However, we quickly learned it wouldn’t be a true Hong Kong experience if it didn’t incorporate a shopping centre in some way!

Our most memorable Peak moment was when we embarked upon our journey up the escalators and found ourselves at the lookout point. The Peak made us feel as though we had an eagle’s view of the whole world. Beautifully co-existing are the wondrous mountains and the monumental skyscrapers which have shaped Hong Kong into the highly recognizable stature it has today. It is almost astounding that two such separate worlds can exist so closely to one another in humble harmony. The clouds and the spattered hints of fog seemed almost at arm’s length and close enough to touch as they glided so seemingly low compared to where we were standing.

The view was truly enriching and is ever engraved into our memory which is why it is a fantastic idea to extend the experience and dine at one of the restaurants located close to the Upper Terminus. The Peak Tower's Observation Deck is also quite spectacular if you are looking to spoil yourself that little bit more.

Disneyland

Hong Kong Disneyland has contributed to the ever expanding brand of everyone’s most memorable childhood experiences being brought to life. If you can think back to a time when you were young and the feeling you were bursting with when you first gazed upon the story of Peter Pan, The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast then you will have a pretty clear indication of what it feels like to explore beyond the gates of Disneyland.

As adults we didn’t think that Disney could give us the same sense of satisfaction and excitement as it did when we were kids, but oh how wrong we were! As soon as we entered this perfectly replicated world of imagination we felt as though we were literally living inside of our favourite childhood cartoons. In front of us were impeccably designed little cobblestone streets resized to make it feel more authentically cartoonlike. Bursting with beautifully bold colours and pastel prints we looked upon gorgeously dreamlike pink and purple lamp posts, white and yellow daisy bushes and petite colourful shopfronts (which you can actually enter into). We did not know which way to turn at first as everything looked so unreal and the colours looked good enough to eat!

This incredible feeling that can instantaneously take you back to your childhood reminded us of the fact that Disneyland is so much more than just about "adventure" rides. The indescribable experience is what makes Disneyland so endearing and magical. One of our favourite non-adventure experiences at Disneyland was the “Mystic Point” which focused mainly on visual illusions which both adults and kids can enjoy alike. The “Mystic Manor” ride actually made me tear up as everything slowly came to life and interacted while we were swept from one room to another in a mystic wooden cart on a Magnetic Track through an antiquities museum of wonders.

If you’re looking for your hit of adventure for the day then we highly recommend Grizzly Gulch, which had everything to illustrated carriage marks, a country setting backdrop and highly enjoyable sound effects. This ride is extremely fun especially once it drops you backwards when you least expect it.

If you are worried about not having enough time to visit all of the rides, Disneyland encourages its visitors to stay at the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel where you can truly take your time and immerse yourself in the Disneyland experience for a few days. You can also get VIP passes which allow you to jump the cues on the all the rides!

Rovos Rail Experience - South Africa

By Kristof Eyckmans | Visiting in April 2017

The modern luxury traveler knows how to get around these days, but only few people know that history is just repeating itself as I found out on my recent Rovos Rail journey.

Commonly referred to as the “Pride of Africa” and “the Most Luxurious Train in the World” this train journeys primarily within South Africa, although trips are offered further and all the way up to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The owner, Rohan Rovos buys old locomotives and carriages and restores them back to their former Victorian glory. The stunning restorations hark back to the former luxury of when trains were today's first class plane experience.

I had high expectations when I arrived at the Rovos Rail train station to start my 2 day journey from Pretoria to Capetown. Yes, you read that correctly, they do have their own railway station and it does take 2 days where a plane would take you there in a mere 2 hours. But this is all about the journey, the timetable is more like a guideline. When entering, the staff directly took charge and made sure that everything was taken care of. My luggage was taken to my deluxe suite while I was welcomed in the lounge area for some canapés and the first of many glasses of vonkelwijn (the local name for South African champagne).

Outside the station, a beautiful locomotive was getting itself ready to pull out all the carriages to accommodate the guests. With a maximum capacity of only 72 passengers, the Rovos Rail train is everything but an ordinary train ride. It features 2 dining carriages, a lounge area, a smokers room and last but not least a bar carriage at the very end of the train with an open air terrace on which one can enjoy a nice glass while the ever changing beautiful African landscapes pass by. Every suite has its own butler and comes with all the modern amenities one can desire on a train. It feels great to take a refreshing shower while rolling on the tracks, or lounge on your king-sized bed while staring outside. And while you are out and about to have a few cocktails in the bar, or to enjoy the great food, your butler will make sure your suite is taken care of. They will also stock the fridge in your suite with all the drinks you desire. I mean, who doesn’t like a pre-dinner drink or a nightcap before they fall asleep under the Egyptian cotton.

Everything is included in this luxurious trip, the amazing food, the delicious wines and spirits, laundry services, the excursions, … You name it, Rovos will provide it for you. They surely take their gastronomy seriously, and every evening there is a formal 4-course dinner including the best ingredients like rock lobster or springbok fillet. The sommelier will help you with the menu and provide all the pairing wines and dessert wines.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. Besides the beautiful landscapes, the star filled night sky, the afternoon tea and the ever so friendly staff, one does have the chance to get out and explore a little bit of the country. On this specific trip there were 2 stops, the first one being in Kimberley, one of the diamond capitals in the world, where we visited the Big Hole. The second day we stopped at Matjiesfontein, an historic and very well preserved Victorian village which blends in perfectly with the style and glamour Rovos Rail represents.

Soon enough our train passed through the Cape winelands and into the city. Our minds had to travel back to the future as we had lived in the glamorous and luxurious past for the last few days. This train isn’t just a means of transport, it is a way of life and one that has to be experienced to truly understand the class and perfection that goes into this time travel.

Idylic Halekulani Hotel - Hawaii

The Halekulani is indisputably the personification of its name "house befitting heaven". This can be seen, heard and felt from the very second you enter the premises; from the relaxing jazz playing in the lobby, the beauty of the grounds, to the rooms, the colour pallet and attention to detail is incredibly pleasing to the eye. Very modern with many charming twists along the way, the Halekulani will have you feeling warmth and zen from within as you observe the minimalist, clean lines and charming mushroom tones.

There was a very spacious and serene sense of indulgence coming over us when we set our eyes on the immaculate gardens of perfectly trimmed grass along with its perfectly lined up flowers bordering the perfectly shaped hedges topped off with four incredibly majestic white pillars framing the entire picture for us.  We must say that the rooms do not cease to live up to this incredible outside beauty either. The first thing that we noticed was that our room was quite spacious and romantically lit. It tastefully featured a combination of marble and wood while keeping some of its island characteristics as well. Walking into our room we were astounded when we caught a glimpse of the most incredible view we had ever seen through the window of our balcony.

As we dropped our bags on the floor instantaneously, we found ourselves running toward the very large “lanai” as though the view was magnetically pulling us towards it. Almost too impeccable to be true we gazed out into the night’s sky able to see each and every unbelievably polished star in the sky that night. The palm trees were the most photogenic trees I had ever seen, almost intentionally scattered and dispersed so effortlessly from one another, not located so to block our view of the incredible ocean, but existing just enough to provide the perfect cherry on top of the cake. The ocean was a bold and bright midnight blue that night even though the evening was in full effect when we arrived. The only light being provided to the ocean was the brightness of the stars and the lights from the city which we could see dancing mingling night’s sky in the distance. We could not believe our eyes as to how beautiful the ocean could look even though the darkness of night had come over it.

In the morning we were amazed all over again, it felt as though an artist had painted us an entirely different picture while we slept as daytime brought with it the most magnificent colours, so tonal that we could not see where the ocean ended and the sky began. Looking down onto the private beach that very first morning, watching the palm trees sway in the slight breeze and the waves crash gently onto the delicate sand, was the perfect way to start our time in Hawaii and became our favourite part about waking up.

If you do not wish to leave the Halekulani in a hurry you will find plenty of luxurious activities within its grounds. We particularly enjoyed the fine dining experiences and our most memorable one has to be at House Without a Key where we enjoyed incredible shrimp, fresh fish and the most scrumptious coconut cake with a beautifully perched lavender frangipani on top struggling to stay up in the abundance of smooth, soft, fluffy cake. We enjoyed sunset drinks at La Mer equally as much tasting the very popular mai tai. We made sure that we didn’t forget to take advantage of the Halekulani’s relaxing heated freshwater pool which again encompassed the island feeling while still remaining very modern through a beautifully designedorchid at the bottom of the large pool. This orchid was created by using more than 1 and a half million mosaic tiles and is quite spectacular at night when the pool is lit up.

One of the most fantastic aspects about staying at the Halekulani (besides the incredible views) and the exquisite dining was the juxtaposition of how close it was to the city center of Waikiki yet how it felt so secluded and far from the busy center life. It certainly was the best of both worlds and this contrast cannot be easily replicated by any other hotel in Hawaii.

Japengo Maui

Tuna steaks, Tuna Poke, Tuna Sushi... The islands of Hawaii are the home of the incredible and versatile Ahi Tuna. Sushi lovers are always in good company.

What topped the list for The Luxury Life on our never-ending quest for the best sushi was the incredibly versatile creations of chef Jim Hosono of Japengo. Situated at the Hyatt Regency on the Ka’anapali Beach, Japengo serves a variety of 'sushi' as well as an ecclectic mix of Asian cuisine. We enjoyed a selection of sushi and sashimi, including the Chef's roll of the day, with stunning and surreal views of Ka’anapali Beach.

There is no wonder that Japengo was awarded the Gold ‘Aipono Award Best Sushi as well as the Maui New's Best Restaurant of 2016 to name just two.

The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa - Hawaii

Leibish & Co Diamonds

For those following our social media channels, you would be aware that on our recent trip to Hawaii I popped the question. We were blessed to be assisted by the wonderful team at the Four Seasons Oahu at Ko Olina who set up the impressive Penthouse for the occasion.

The first step in executing a marriage proposal is getting a ring. I can understand it being a daunting task. On the one hand there are financial considerations. On the other, there is the want to satisfy your would-be bride's tastes and expectations. Thankfully, I had a good idea of my brief - a cushion cut yellow diamond on a white gold paved halo setting.

Thankfully, it came down to finding the best ring at the right price. Yellow Diamonds are a niche and I am a busy professional so I commenced my search with the big brands in full knowledge that I will overpay but, at the very least,  I will not be scammed.

I began with Tiffany & Co. $45,000 for a stone of average quality. I continued my search and the results were a hindrance  - if I wanted to buy off the shelf I would need to part with $30,000 - $50,000.

Our fancy cushion cut light yellow diamond halo ring by Leibish & Co

Our fancy cushion cut light yellow diamond halo ring by Leibish & Co

So, as we do, I went to Google. There I found Leibish & Co - specialists in fancy coloured diamonds. You could shop by setting, my stone or by pre-designed ring. I spent a week or so obsessing over the website. Do I buy the stone from them and get it put in a setting here? Are they are legitimate website? While the team was entirely professional during the purchase process it always lingers at the back of my mind. Reviews existed out there but they were not the reviews of the average purchaser - rather, speciality jewellery blogs.

Approximately a month after payment the ring arrived by FedEx. It was well packed, accompanied by an appraisal, original GIA certificate and housed in an elegant jewellery box. On seeing the ring I was taken back - it was incredible. Thankfully, the diamond was larger than expected, the craftmanship was perfect and it sparkled. Boy does it sparkle.

If they have what you are looking for, I do not hesitate to recommend Leibish & Co.

The Location - Mong Kok

Mong Kok is Hong Kong’s most congested shopping and residential district, but don’t let that scare you away. The neon-bathed historic streets that wind through one of the densest parts of the world are worth visiting - just for the ‘peoplescapes’ alone. It just so happens that the shopping is excellent too.

The neighbourhood includes one of Hong Kong’s most popular markets, the Ladies' Market, and also has a ton of shopping streets, which are a common feature in southern China. Conveniently, these are where a cluster of merchants sell one type of product on a single street. Mong Kok has entire streets and street sections dedicated to the sale of goldfish, flowers, birds, sneakers, and kitchenware.

Just about everything from bargain household objects to luxury jewellery is bought, sold and haggled over in Mong Kok. Sai Yeung Choi Street sells electronics, cosmetics and clothes; Shantung Street and Dundas Street are where you can pick up the latest Japanese and Western fashion and accessories; while Langham Place is one of the many malls where you can do your Mong Kok shopping in air-conditioned comfort.
